The Curious Case of David De Gea

Manchester United have been fortunate in the last number of decades in the goalkeeping position, from Peter Schmeichal, Edwin Van Der Sar and more recently Spanish Dave. He has been a constant star in between the sticks for the Red Devils after his initiation to the Premier League, where he had to bulk up. The question on Man Utd’s fans lips is, will he sign a new contract or leave to new pastures? United fans wouldn’t begrudge De Gea of a move away from the club as he has done everything in his power to ensure the Old Trafford outfit are competing for trophies. We will analyse some of the clubs who could be potentially interested in Spanish Dave.

Unai Emery will be looking at De Gea’s situation, if he could manage to lure De Gea to London, it would be a major coup for him. It would be the foundation blocks for Arsenal to come back and look to win the major trophies one again. However, the major issue will be the transfer fee and wages for Arsenal, but the return on investment would be much greater than their outlay.

Real Madrid

The signing of Courtouis last season ensured United fans didn’t have to worry too much about the Spanish giants coming in for their prizes possession. However, along with the rest of the Madrid team, the Belgian is not performing as they would have hoped. This could lead to a potential bid from Los Blancos, which would surely result in winning some of the worlds coveted prizes.

The Saudi owned club invested in one of the legends of the game, in Gianluigi Buffon to push them to winning the Champions League. However, at the age of 40, how long does Buffon want to keep it up between the sticks. Ligue 1 is not as competitive as other leagues, yet. With the influx of cash next season due the new TV deal, this may make things interesting. De Gea would be welcomed with open arms.

The signing of Ronaldo in the summer showed serious intent this season to win the Champions League. The return match versus United in Turin showed why Szczesny is not world class and is a potential weak point in the Old Lady’s team. Would that 2nd goal have gone in if they had De Gea? The final piece of a magnificent puzzle would surely be completed.

The most likely outcome is De Gea will more than likely extend his contract with United for one more year to allow his club receive a transfer fee for his services. Thus, allowing him to join Juventus next summer. Man Utd will have a massive void between the sticks in front of the Stretford End next summer.
