Manchester United 2-1 Tottenham Hotspur: Key talking points

So what did you make of today's game?

Hesham: After the first 15 minutes, I feared the worst. Was reminiscent of the loss at Wembley earlier in the season, the marking was dreadful for that opening Spurs goal. However, like we’ve seen in recent weeks to United showed incredible desire when behind. They started winning the second balls and looking stronger than their opponents. Two pieces of brilliance in a display which showed shades of the superstar we signed from Juve with Pogba.

Alexis turning up in a Wembley game was stunning to see. After the superb showing of he young guns vs Bournemouth, he had to turn up and he did. Made the perfect runs and showed real decisiveness in the final third.

Ander Herrera scored the winner for Manchester United

Mourinho has been widely criticised throughout the season along with Pogba and Alexis but yet again when they needed it most United stepped up. How do you assess the trip I've just mentioned?

Hesham: It showed real character in the squad. It shows that they have the potential to do it in big games consistently after showing up in the Derby too.

Another cup final for Mourinho and United does he deserve more credit?

There’s nothing wrong with both praising and criticising Jose. His tactical stubbornness and alienation of talented players like Martial will always count against him. Even despite the frustration, he has managed to carve out big statement wins all season long so for that he definitely deserves credit. If there was a few more wins in the smaller games where the team has messed up, it could’ve looked a very different season with United right on City’s coattails.

On Martial then, where does he go from here? Is he rightfully behind Sanchez?

Hesham: No one in a big team deserves a guaranteed spot. The problem is that many have seen Alexis be inconsistent without being dropped yet see Martial benched even after good performances. There seems to be an inherent bias to please Alexis. The linkup between Martial-Pogba has seen to be more fluid earlier in the season too compared to Alexis getting in Pogba’s way in the inner left channel. I still think both can play in the same side with Alexis drifting from the right and Martial on the left, just praying we see Jose try that before Martial agrees to leave.

Certainly will be one to keep an eye on. Finally then, 2nd place and an FA Cup win looks on for Mourinho and United. A successful season?

Hesham: Not sure you can call it a successful season by United’s traditionally Sky-high standards, however you can call it a good season. A trophy and runners up is better than any other English side except City unless Liverpool somehow miraculously won the Champions League. It’s a superb building platform again, for a better title push next provided we keep all our big guns and get rid of the deadwood.
